United's Under-18s came up against a five-star Sunderland performance Carrington at the weekend, going down 5-1 to the Black Cats.
Sunderland, who head their regional divison (the Premier Academy League is divided into four regional sections), remained top of the league with this victory.
Liam Noble fired the visitors in front on 30 minutes with a long-range effort. The Reds battled hard until the 55th minute, when a quick-fire Sunderland double from Jordan Henderson and Martyn Waghorn made it 3-0, effectively ending any hopes of a United comeback.
Nathan Luscombe added a fourth and a fifth, either side of Reds winger Chris Curran's consolation strike on 84 minutes, completing a disappointing day for Paul McGuinness' young Reds.
United now have two league games remaining this season to try and erase the memory of this result. The Reds Under-18s travel to Sheffield United (5 April), before bringing the curtain down on their season away to Newcastle United (12 April).
