Young Reds midfielder Oliver Norwood's stunning free-kick was well worthy of winning this match.
The 17-year-old has been in fine form so far this season for Paul McGuinness' Under-18s side, and he conjured what proved to be the only goal of the game in the 34th minute.
Norwood had United's first chance immediately on the first whistle. His shot from the halfway line, after being teed up from the kick-off, wasn't far off earning an early lead.
The Burnley-born youngster's ambitious shooting - very often justified by his talent for hitting the target - is one of his major assets when bursting forward from midfield.
He was given his chance to strike from just outside the area when winger Cameron Stewart cut inside from the left and was brought down. Norwood struck a wonderful arcing set-piece past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0.
In a tough, physical battle the Reds managed to see the game out and ensure United got back to winning ways after last week's blip against Crewe.
