The Reds’ Under-18s ended a run of disappointing results with an emphatic 6-1 victory, regaining top spot in the Premier Academy League Group C and exacting sweet revenge on Blackburn Rovers, the team who knocked United out of the FA Youth Cup last month.
Rovers dumped United out of the prestigious competition at the fifth round stage with a 3-0 win at Ewood Park. And the Reds followed that up with a 1-0 loss to Liverpool and a 3-0 reverse against West Bromwich Albion.
But United were determined to set the record straight and rediscover the goalscoring form that had accompanied some excellent displays between October and January.
Winger Robbie Brady made a welcome return from a lengthy injury lay-off, while forward Joshua King was in outstanding form all afternoon. The 18-year-old pair got the goals that gave a clinical United a 2-0 first-half lead, although both sides had threatened.
