U18s: United 0 Liverpool 1

A disappointing week for United's Academy was completed at Carrington on Saturday when Liverpool inflicted a first league defeat since early October.

Following Thursday's 0-3 exit from the FA Youth Cup at Blackburn Rovers, Paul McGuinness' boys were hoping to bounce back with a win over their arch-rivals. But a tight game was settled in Liverpool's favour just five minutes from time when their 16 year-old Icelandic midfielder Kristjan Gauti Emilsson headed home from a right-wing cross.

A dour first half of few chances was perhaps understandable following a delayed start; with the regular Academy pitch frozen, the young sides had to play on the first team's training pitch - but only after Sir Alex Ferguson's men had finished their session.

The second half was a more lively affair, especially towards the end when Emilsson opened the scoring, Ryan Tunnicliffe had an injury-time attempt to equalise cleared off the line and Reds goalkeeper Sam Johnstone produced a cracking one-handed save to prevent in-form Finnish striker Lauri Dalle Valle doubling Liverpool's margin of victory.

United's previous loss in the league, 1-2 at Crewe, occurred on 10 October last year.
