Reds lift Slemish Trophy

United's Under-17 side have won the Slemish Trophy in Northern Ireland after beating Hartlepool United 4-1 on Friday.

Paul McGuinness' men had crossed the Irish Sea with dreams of lifting a third conseuctive Milk Cup trophy but defeat to Qatar's Aspire Academy on Tuesday meant the young Reds failed to qualify for that competition's quarter-finals.

Instead, the team spent the rest of the week contesting the Slemish Trophy and beat County Down and Shamrock Rovers en route to Friday's final.

Against Hartlepool, Etzaz Hussain gave the young Reds an early lead with a deflected shot from the edge of the penalty area before a defensive error gifted 'Pool an equaliser.

The score remained at 1-1 until approximately 10 minutes from the end when John Cofie latched on to a lofted pass to slot home the Reds' second. Luke Giverin, aided by a pass from Will Keane, scored a third before Cofie netted his second of the match and seventh of the week.
