Paul McGuinness’ side staged an epic comeback at Anfield to book their place in the FA Youth Cup semi-finals thanks to a 3-2 victory over Liverpool.
Adam Morgan had put the home side 2-0 ahead with a goal in each half, but United turned things around 15 minutes into the second period through Larnell Cole and Ravel Morrison, who also grabbed the winner four minutes from time. Both teams finished the match with nine men after a flurry of second half red cards.
The Reds were up against a Liverpool side who had notched 55 goals in their last 15 games, including nine in the last round victory over Southend, and the home side were lively from the off. Raheem Sterling made a darting run forward on four minutes before being clipped just outside the box by Paul Pogba who picked up a caution for his actions. Suso took the free-kick which Sam Johnstone palmed clear, before saving again from Suso who followed up the resulting corner with a rasping drive on goal.
Andre Wisdom headed Suso’s corner just over soon after as Liverpool continued to threaten.
Morrison went close at the other end on 13 minutes with a curling effort which flew just over Tyrell Belford’s bar after a neat one-two with Pogba 20 yards out. That was United’s only real effort on goal throughout the first period with Liverpool creating much the better of the chances.
Suso and Sterling were proving tricky to handle and their link up in the 23rd minute almost led to the breakthrough. Krisztian Adorjan found Sterling down the left and he in turn picked out Suso in the area, but Johnstone was there to save smartly with his feet from the winger’s low drive.
Ten minutes later Liverpool took the lead. Sterling collected possession in midfield and slotted a lovely ball into the path of Morgan and the in-form striker finished with aplomb in front of the Kop.
