U18s: United 3 Newcastle 0

However, the visitors began to ask some questions of their own in an attacking sense and almost pulled one back when Rudge cleared an Alex Gilliead header off the line and Pierluigi Gollini kept out Steven Logan's follow-up. Gollini also had to make a brave stop to halt Gilliead's charge forward as Paul McGuinness' side stood firm.

Rowley was unable to finish off a Love pass and there was a remarkable escape for the Tynesiders when great industry and unselfishness by Pereira carved out the simplest of chances for substitute Gorre but Lee Desmond somehow managed to chest off the line from point-blank range when a third goal seemed an inevitability.

Gorre did get on the scoresheet, as he did in the 7-1 romp, with eight minutes remaining as he profited from some strong play and a flighted left-foot cross by Daehli to nod in confidently. Love pulled a shot wide and the precocious Daehli bent Gorre's pass inches the wrong side of the far post as United kept up the pressure until the final whistle.

United: Gollini; Love, Wilkinson, Grimshaw (Dalley 84), Rowley; Weir, Pearson, Rudge (Gorre 59), Daehli; Pereira; Wilson (Byrne 68). Sub not used: O'Hara.
