U18s: Burnley 0 United 2

Manchester United’s Under-18s progressed to the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup after a hard-fought 2-0 win away to Burnley.

Coming courtesy of two fine individual strikes from Andreas Pereira and James Wilson, the win avenged last season’s third round defeat to Burnley at Old Trafford.

In a tight affair at Turf Moor it was the home side who took the early initiative, looking to utilise the pace of wingers Callum Jackson and Christian Hill. Having won an early corner, Kevin Ly lofted a ball towards former United youth player Luke Daly whose half-volleyed effort was cleared off the line by Josh Harrop.

With Burnley continuing to look bright, United, clad in all white, struggled to fashion any penetrative forays into the opposition half. However, one positive for the Reds was that the defensive rear-guard, marshalled by McConnell and Evans, stood firm against the Clarets allowing United to gain more of a foothold into the game as the half drew on.

James Wilson looked as lively as ever up front and tried repeatedly to get in behind the Burnley back four, but United’s midfield trio of Goss, Willock and Harrop found it difficult to create any real opportunities of note.

The best chance of the half fell to Burnley after more great work down the right-hand side. Jackson teed up Cameron Dummigan whose cross found Khius Metz, but the forward could only fire over.

As the early stages of the second half unfolded, Burnley continued to pose the greater threat and Jamie Frost should have done better when he shot wide after excellent play from Dummigan.

It seemed a moment of magic may be required to break the deadlock and that duly arrived just before the hour mark. Saidy Janko received the ball on the right and played a simple pass to Andreas Pereira who found himself a yard of space and unleashed a stunning drive into the top corner.
