Young Reds play in Germany

United finished their Group A campaign in the Mercedes-Benz Junior Cup with only a point to show for their efforts in the six-a-side tournament.

The Reds' youngsters were up against it, particularly against two German-based teams who seemed well versed in this format of the game.

However, Ben Pearson's goal, following a neat turn by Jack Barmby, ensured Paul McGuinness' team led at the break in the opening game against Schalke. The Bundesliga outfit hit back to win 2-1 despite a superb performance by keeper Jonny Sutherland.

United, captained by Tom Lawrence, came from behind themselves to force a 1-1 draw against FC Copenhagen. Barmby's teasing cross was met by a diving header from James Weir to secure a point against the Danes.

The final fixture ended in a 4-0 reverse against Stuttgart, the club from close to where the tournament is being held, despite the best efforts of the likes of Mats Daehli, Pearson and James Wilson with the team being regularly rotated during the action.
