U19: Utd 0 Sociedad 1

Despite that bright moment, Sociedad replied with Jon Guiridi's header held by Joel Castro Pereira and Bautista getting past the keeper, only for Pearson to make a vital saving tackle. Back came the Reds and substitute James Weir saw a strong penalty claim turned down by referee Kevin Clancy after appearing to be tripped by centre-back Andoni Ugarte.

Ashley Fletcher was introduced to pep up the attack and Joe Rothwell soon smashed over a fine attempt from a Wilson lay-off but it proved difficult to maintain a spell of real pressure and Marcellan remained largely untested.

Odriozola had a deflected attempt fly just off target during one of a number of breakaways by the swift Spaniards and then forced two splendid late stops out of Joel Castro Pereira. Pearson was then shown a red card in the dying seconds for two bookable offences in quick succession after kicking the ball at the grounded Martin Merquelanz.

United: J.Pereira; Janko, McConnell, Ioannou, Rowley (Goss 76); A.Pereira (Weir 58), Rothwell, Pearson, Harrop (Fletcher 66); Byrne, Wilson. Subs not used: O'Hara, Evans, Willock, Barber.
