Robbo: Boss is the best

Club ambassador Bryan Robson has paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson, describing the retiring Manchester United manager as the “greatest there has ever been.”

The Reds boss announced his exit on Wednesday, bringing an end to an illustrious career that yielded 38 major honours whilst in charge at Old Trafford – not to mention the various trophies lifted during separate spells with St Mirren and Aberdeen.

As a result, Sir Alex’s place in the pantheon of great managers is secure. However, when asked exactly where the boss ranks amongst the likes of Bill Shankly and Brian Clough, Robbo is clear in his assessment that his former gaffer tops the lot.

“For me, you have got to say he has been the greatest club manager there has ever been anywhere in the world – especially when you think that he has built four or five squads to be successful,” Bryan explains.

“And what he did at Aberdeen as well, it is incredible. To have the success that he had up in Scotland before he came to United was terrific. Because of that record, he has to go down as the very best.”

Famously, the media once claimed Sir Alex was on the brink of losing his job during the 1989/90 campaign until Mark Robins hit the winner in the FA Cup third round at Notts Forest to send the boss en route to his first trophy triumph at Wembley.

And although Captain Marvel didn’t buy into those rumours, nor anybody else at Old Trafford, he does feel that success – as well as the Cup Winners’ Cup win - provided enough momentum and confidence to push on for the inaugural Premier League title.
