And although Captain Marvel didn’t buy into those rumours, nor anybody else at Old Trafford, he does feel that success – as well as the Cup Winners’ Cup win - provided enough momentum and confidence to push on for the inaugural Premier League title.
“People were speaking about that at the time when we played Nottingham Forest and thankfully Mark Robins scored the goal and we went on to win the FA Cup that year, which gave the players at Manchester Untied a little bit of confidence to go on,” Bryan recalls.
“But then the next season, I really did believe that beating Barcelona in the Cup Winners’ Cup final in 1991, which gave the lads the real motivation and confidence to go on and win the title the next year. Thankfully, Sir Matt Busby was still alive at that time because after 26 years, the title was the one that everybody wanted and Sir Alex delivered it. The rest of his success is in the history books.”
