The original Seattle Sounders were created prior to the 1974 North American Soccer League season. A year before their demise - in 1983 - they hosted United at The Kingdome in Seattle and recorded a 3-0 victory over the Reds. The Sounders were reformed in November 2007 and have barely looked back since beating New York Red Bulls 3-0 in their inaugural match on 19 March 2009. The Western Conference side qualified for the MLS Cup playoffs in each of their first two seasons and became the first ever MLS team to win back-to-back U.S Open Cups in 2009 and 2010.
German-born Sigi Schmid, 58, became the reformed Sounders’ first head coach in December 2008. He is recognised as one of the most successful coaches in MLS history having previously enjoyed success with LA Galaxy and Columbus Crew. In fact since 1999, his teams have won six major titles, including two MLS Cups. Schmid, who was assistant to USA manager Bora Milutinovic at the 1994 World Cup, was named MLS Coach of the Year in 1999 and 2008.
Osvaldo Alonso. The Cuban international was named the club’s Most Valuable Player for the 2010 season after playing an instrumental role in a strong second half of the season for the Sounders. The hard-working central midfielder, who tends to play just in front of the back four, is known for his ball-winning skills and passing.
