The opposition Representing Italy’s most historic city, A.S. Roma were formed in 1927. The club originated from the amalgamation of three Rome clubs – SS Alba Audace, Fortitudo Pro Roma SGS and Roman FC – and were initially coached by William Garbutt, an Englishman, who led the club to its first trophy, the now defunct CONI Cup, in 1928.
Previous meetings The standout clash between United and Roma has to be the Reds' sensational 7-1 win over the Giallorossi back in April 2007. Having lost the away leg 2-1, United were on fire in front of a raucous Old Trafford crowd, which spurred the team on to a glorious European win. The tie was to be the second of six games the Reds’ played against Roma in 2007 and 2008, with United beating Roma in the 2008 Champions League quarter-finals on the way to winning the trophy.
Head coach This season has been French coach Rudi Garcia’s first in charge and his side started the campaign in fine fettle, winning their first 10 league matches. During the unbeaten run Roma scored 24 goals and conceded only one before the record finally came to an end in a 1-1 draw against Torino in November. They currently lie second behind league leaders Juventus.
