All you need to know about United's opponents in the International Champions Cup clash in Washington DC...
The opposition FC Internazionale Milano (commonly known as Inter Milan) are one of Italy’s most recognisable teams. With a proud history dating back to 1908, the team was originally formed after an Italian/Swiss-led consortium became disgruntled at the domination of Italians playing for AC Milan and decided that an alternative was needed. As such, Inter was formed and quickly established a policy of attracting players from foreign shores as well as Italian. To date, the Nerazzuri have won 18 Serie A titles and three Champions League crowns.
Previous meetings United have faced Inter on four previous occasions, all in the Champions League. The first tie, back in 1999, featured a 2-0 win at Old Trafford that was complimented by a 1-1 draw at the San Siro - a game in which Paul Scholes grabbed the crucial away goal. More recently, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side faced off against Jose Mourinho’s men in 2009, once again emerging victorious via the means of a 2-0 home win after a first-leg 0-0 stalemate.
Head coach Walter Mazzarri is the man currently in the Inter hot-seat. The Italian was unveiled as boss in May 2013 after the sacking of Andrea Stramaccioni and will face United for the very first time during Tour 2014, presented by Aon.
