Valerenga v United

State of play: After a week’s training at Carrington, United embark on the three-game European leg of the DHL 2012 pre-season tour with a friendly at Oslo’s Ullevaal Stadium against a Valerenga side who are already halfway through their league season (they’re sixth in the Norwegian top-flight table).

Ins and outs: United’s Euro 2012 representatives have returned to training and, with less than three weeks until the start of the league season, Sir Alex has confirmed he’ll play his strongest available side in Norway, so expect to see the likes of Wayne Rooney, Nani, Danny Welbeck and Patrice Evra. Valerenga have former Wigan midfielder Kristofer Haestad and ex-Tottenham squad goalkeeper Lars Hirschfeld in their ranks, but may not field their strongest team as they will have been in league action two days earlier.

Last game in Norway: United faced Valerenga in the summer of 2002, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer captaining the side on his return to his homeland. Solskjaer converted a penalty on 26 minutes, before Valerenga defender Pa-Modou Kah equalised from long range. In front of 25,000 fans, Roy Keane won it with six minutes left from close range.
