The news that Manchester United will play Hannover 96 in a pre-season friendly this summer invariably evokes memories of past trips to Germany.
Not all of them have been successful (W5 D4 L4) but the Reds did emerge from the last trip to Deutchsland with heads held high and one foot firmly in the Champions League final.
It was a first-leg victory over FC Schalke that did the trick, with Sir Alex's men running riot against the German side. In fact, but for goalkeeper Manuel Neuer's heroics, it could have been a cricket score by half-time.
Ryan Giggs eventually broke the deadlock in the 67th minute, with Wayne Rooney doubling United's advantage two minutes later. With a second-leg tie at home the following week, the Reds were all but assured of a Champions League final berth.
