United embarked on the 2005 Asia Tour under new ownership and with several new faces in the squad.
Ji-sung Park and Edwin van der Sar had joined the Reds in the close season, while Dong Fangzhuo would make his unofficial debut in his homeland after 18 months on loan at Royal Antwerp. The new arrivals all featured in the opening game against a Hong Kong XI at the National Stadium with Sir Alex opting to field a completely different side in each half. After United missed a hatful of chances, Giuseppe Rossi opened the scoring and debutant Dong – to the biggest cheer of the afternoon – bagged a second to ensure the tour got off to a winning start.
Cristiano Ronaldo joined the rest of the squad for the second leg of the trip in Beijing, having missed the opening game for family reasons. He played the second half of the 3-0 win over Beijing Hyundai - Paul Scholes scored twice in quick succession before half-time, and Park completed the scoring with a first goal for his new club, heading home Ronaldo's cross two minutes after the break.
Two wins and two clean sheets made for a satisfactory start but, after moving on to Japan, United came unstuck against Kashima Antlers in front of 40,000 fans at a rowdy Tokyo National Stadium. A
