Moyes in awe of appeal

Saturday – may not have gone to plan in terms of the result, but he was pleased with the workout his side underwent in testing conditions.

Pre-season results have never been an accurate barometer for the season that follows and Moyes wasn't too concerned by the shock defeat. Certainly, he still has his sights set high for the 2013/14 campaign.

"The objectives for the season are probably no different from what any Manchester United objectives would be: to win as many trophies as possible.

"It's my first season as manager and I'm following probably the finest football manager that’s ever lived. If I can even win a quarter of what he won I'll have done very well. The first thing is to settle in to the job, get to know everybody and find my own way around."

Manchester United play the Foxtel A-League All-Stars at ANZ Stadium in Sydney on Saturday 20 July (10:30 BST).
