Cleverley: Sydney ideal

Tom Cleverley believes Manchester United's week in Sydney has been hugely productive on a number of fronts, and says the English champions are now keen to maintain the high standards that helped the Reds beat the Foxtel A-League All Stars 5-1 on Saturday night.

The performance was a marked improvement on United's first pre-season outing, a 1-0 loss in Bangkok against a Singha All-Star XI.

"It felt a lot better tonight," Cleverley told and PA Sport after the final whistle. "We got the cobwebs out in Thailand. I felt much better tonight and this performance will give us confidence going into the rest of the tour."

The young midfielder and his team-mates will have benefited from a week's training in Australia, in the lead-up to Saturday's sell-out fixture at ANZ Stadium.

And while the Reds were given the chance to see some of the sights Sydney had to offer, the focus, Cleverley said, was well and truly on improving fitness.

"I think all the lads would say that the Thursday and Friday sessions were really sharp. We’ve definitely hit that extra gear and we’ll benefit from [Saturday's match] as well. You can definitely see in training that the intensity has stepped up and the players have got to know each other better. We’re moving forward.

"I think all the  boys have enjoyed David Moyes' training. We’ve been working hard and we’re all looking really sharp now. We want to keep it like that."

United's next test comes against Yokohama F·Marinos on Tuesday 23 July.
