Long-term fan Phil Dawson recalls the day his young son made his debut on the Old Trafford turf...
I've supported United since 1975 and started travelling to Old Trafford regularly from 1984 when I came up from London with the Epsom supporters' branch.
This continued when I moved to the Cotswolds and travelled with the Gloucester and Cheltenham branch to matches home, away and abroad.
Now living in Scotland, I was stunned to hear that I had won a competition where my son, Alex, could be a mascot for United’s Champions League quarter-final first leg tie against Porto at Old Trafford in April 2009.
Despite being only eight years old, Alex took it all in his stride and even asked me why I make him do these kinds of things, not that he walks out at Old Trafford every day of the week! With kick-off fast approaching, the players started to make their way out of the tunnel along with my son who marched across the field with his little chest stuck out and his head held high.
I've watched so many great players grace the Old Trafford turf - Schmeichel, Robson, Cantona… but I have never felt more proud as a United fan than I did as my son strolled across the pitch, hopefully not for the only time in his life.
