Bruno Fernandes

Bruno: We wanted to win for the fans

Tuesday 18 May 2021 21:18

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes was disappointed not to give our supporters a win against Fulham as they returned to Old Trafford for the first time in 14 months.

When Edinson Cavani sent United ahead with a sensational 40-yard lob in front of the Stretford End in the first half, following a Fernandes back-heel flick, many were expecting a triumph in our final home match of the season.

Unfortunately, it was not to be, in front of a 10,000-strong Old Trafford faithful. Joe Bryan's 76th-minute headed equaliser made sure the Reds and Cottagers shared the Premier League points on Tuesday evening.

After the game, Fernandes was asked about ‘that’ Cavani goal, plus fans returning and the Europa League final…

When speaking to MUTV in his post-match interview, Bruno thanked the crowd for their support from.

"Really good. It's really good to have the fans back," our captain for the night said.

"We know how important they are for us and honestly everyone is disappointed not to give better a result to them. The performance was good, not enough but anyway we tried to do our best to get a better result to them but today it was not possible."

As was the case in his first six weeks as a United player, Bruno's name was of course sung by the fans inside the Theatre of Dreams and the Portuguese magnifico reveals it was special to hear his catchy chant once again.

"It was really good, really good," our no. 18 said.

“You know, the feeling I had in the first game when I came straight in against Wolves, it’s the same feeling I had today. It’s really nice to hear that kind of song, hear them singing your name is really, really good and makes everyone happy. I think every player who has the chance to have this is really grateful.”

Our Portuguese magnifico Bruno Fernandes is unveiled as the 2020/21 winner to follow up last year's success.

Bruno claimed his 18th assist of the season for Cavani's worldie in the first-half but the man himself wasn't sure if he actually got a touch to David De Gea's forward ball.

"I don’t know," he revealed with a laugh.

"Honestly, I think I don’t but the referee was saying I touched it and gave the assist to me and honestly I don’t care, we scored and that’s what’s important.”

In contrast, the 26-year-old is pretty sure this was only the first of several Cavani moments for our fans to enjoy at Old Trafford.

“I think they only saw a little bit of Cavani today,” Tuesday evening's skipper said.

“This is what he can give, this is what he can do. So, I hope they can see it more and more this season.”

After our no. 7's dream moment, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side continued to create good chances in search of a vital second goal, but Alphonse Areola performed well in the Cottagers' net to deny Bruno and Mason Greenwood, among others, on multiple occasions.

“Yeah, we had many chances to do it, that was the point," the Portuguese playmaker said when asked if it was frustrating not to score more than once.

“We could do it but it was that kind of game where you don’t score and the ball doesn’t go in and you end up conceding a goal. Well played by Fulham. I think it was a little bit waste of time of them from the beginning of the game, our thinking was that the game would be more open today as they were already relegated. Okay, we had our chances to play for second place but honestly our goal of going to the Champions League was done, so I was thinking a bit of a more open game for both teams but it was not like that.”

Now, focus turns to our Premier League season finale away at Wolves on Sunday before we travel to Gdansk for the UEFA Europa League final against Villarreal on 26 May. Ole's men have only gained a point from our last three league matches but that does not concern our Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year.

"No, the final is a different game.

“The most important now is that we focus on Wolves, a difficult game. We know they defend well, we know they have quality in the team. We just have to go there and win the game and we only have to think about the next one.”
