Chris Smalling against Bournemouth.

Smalling: Let's take this winning spirit to Turin

Sunday 04 November 2018 22:30

Chris Smalling believes Manchester United can build on the recent good form and beat Juventus in Wednesday night’s pivotal Champions League match in Turin.

Speaking after the 2-1 Premier League win against Bournemouth on Saturday, the defender also said that starting the match in Italy in the same way the team finished against the Italians at Old Trafford will put them in a strong position.

“Against Juventus we started a little in awe, we were off the pace and we weren’t really on the front foot," Chris told us. "I think in the second half we showed that we could give them a game, that we could create chances.

“I think we can take that second-half performance to Turin, we’ll be more on the front foot and you’ll see a better performance than you did in the first half.”

The Englishman also said a strong showing against Juventus will provide the club with momentum going into next weekend’s Manchester derby at the Etihad.

Smalling added: “We know we’re going into a very tough week now, but if we can come out with some good results, it will be seen as a good month considering it was probably one of our toughest months.

“That would galvanise us and knowing that we’ve had some big games this month and that we’ve gone toe to toe and picked up good results.

“Even going into this [match with Bournemouth] we could see after the international break we’ve got a lot of home games and it was all about this month, making sure we could get results and move up that table despite the tough games.”

Saturday’s match at the Vitality Stadium saw the Reds come from behind to claim victory thanks to an injury-time-winner from Marcus Rashford.

That means United are now unbeaten in their last four Premier League matches.

Asked what has been behind the upturn in the Reds’ form, Smalling said: “I think it’s just the togetherness.

"I think we show it every day on the training pitch and it’s just about showing it on a matchday because we players, we get on and we enjoy playing with each other and we just want to express that on a matchday and get it to click.”
