EFL Trophy: Stockport v United Under-21s

Tuesday 22 August 2023 22:00

Manchester United Under-21s are up and running in the EFL Trophy, after winning a penalty shootout when our opening Group E game away to Stockport County ended 1-1.

Charlie McNeill, Shola Shoretire, James Nolan, Ethan Williams and finally Ethan Wheatley all scored from the spot, while goalkeeper Elyh Harrison pulled off a brilliant save to deny the home side's Ryan Rydel.

There were also two penalties in the second half, one for each team. Joe Hugill's kick, earned by substitute Williams, was saved but the no.52 calmly slotted the rebound past County 'keeper Jordan Smith to give United a 64th-minute lead as the contest improved following a goalless first 45.

Catch up with the action from Edgeley Park, where our Under-21s' EFL Trophy tie ended in a penalty shootout...

That advantage remained intact until the 13th minute of injury time when a penalty was awarded against Harrison and Tanto Olaofe converted it to equalise for ten-man Stockport - they had captain Ryan Croasdale sent off in the 76th minute for a second yellow card, shown for a foul on Shola Shoretire.

The outcome delighted the 1,600 United fans in a capped attendance of 5,000 at Edgeley Park and we can look forward to our other games in Group E, away to Bolton Wanderers on 26 September (date subject to change) and Salford City on 31 October.
