Pellistri called up for World Cup

Facundo Pellistri is the latest Manchester United player to be called up by his country for the 2022 World Cup.

The 20-year-old winger, who is yet to make his senior bow for the Reds, has been selected as part of Uruguay's 26-man squad for the upcoming tournament in Qatar.

La Celeste, who won the competition in 1930 and 1950, have been drawn in Group H alongside Ghana, South Korea and Portugal - who are represented by three of Pellistri's team-mates, in Diogo Dalot, Bruno Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Pellistri's debut for Uruguay came in January of this year, while he was on loan with Alaves in Spain.

He has seven caps so far for his country and played an important role in helping Diego Alonso's side to recover from a poor start to their qualifying campaign to secure a spot at the 32-team tournament.

The South Americans have played at each of the last three World Cups, reaching the semi-final in 2010 before round-of-16 and quarter-final finishes in 2014 and 2018 respectively.

Alonso's squad contains several veterans of those campaigns, including captain Diego Godin, record goalscorer Luis Suarez and former Old Trafford favourite Edinson Cavani.

Another ex-Red, in Flamengo's Guillermo Varela, has also been picked, while Rodrigo Bentancur and Darwin Nunez will be familiar names to Premier League viewers.
