What United need on matchday six

Monday 11 December 2023 10:42

It's clear what must happen on Tuesday if Manchester United are to progress from Group A to the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.

An eventful matchday five in the competition saw United draw 3-3 with Galatasaray, despite twice holding a two-goal lead.

Bayern Munich, who were already confirmed as winners of the group, were also held hours later, as FC Copenhagen became the first side in five years to avoid defeat to the Germans at this stage of the tournament.

That pair of results means Copenhagen and Galatasaray are tied on five points in second and third respectively, with the former having the slight goal-difference advantage.

Erik ten Hag's side are a point further back, but can still make it to the round of 16.

In order to do that, a specific combination of results is required at Old Trafford and Parken Stadium on Tuesday.

United must win against Bayern at the Theatre of Dreams to stand any chance of finishing in second, behind the Bundesliga club.

Paris Saint-Germain, in September 2017, were the last club to beat Bavaria's finest in a group-stage match but even emulating that feat may not be enough.

Copenhagen will host Galatasaray simultaneously and that match must finish level, in combination with three points for United, if we are to progress.

The reverse fixture did end all-square back in September, with the Turks netting twice in the closing stages to pull the game back after Copenhagen's Elias Jelert was dismissed.

Ahead of Tuesday's clash, we recall United's 1-1 home draw against Bayern Munich, in December '98.

If United beat Bayern and either side claims victory in Denmark, we will finish third in the group and enter the Europa League preliminary knockout round in February 2024.

There is a scenario where the Reds can draw on Tuesday and remain in European competition next year, but that will only happen if Galatasaray win.

Any other sequence of results would mean a fourth-placed finish for Ten Hag's men.
