Jose's team news for Valencia tie

Monday 01 October 2018 13:55

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has provided MUTV with an update on his plans for Tuesday's Champions League tie with Valencia.

The boss is set to be without four absentees for the match under the lights at Old Trafford, as the hosts look to build on the convincing 3-0 victory over Young Boys on matchday one.

Ashley Young picked up an injury during the weekend loss at West Ham United, while Marcos Rojo, Ander Herrera and Jesse Lingard are also on the sidelines.

Ashley Young sustained an injury during the 3-1 defeat at West Ham.

The unavailability of Young, who captained the side at the London Stadium, should open the door to either Antonio Valencia or Diogo Dalot to operate on the right-hand side of defence. Three central defenders were employed against the Hammers, with Scott McTominay performing in a new role for him.

Alexis Sanchez did not play and was not among the substitutes on Saturday, but he trained in front of the cameras on Monday morning at the Aon Training Complex and could be an option.

"Apart from Marcos Rojo, now we have Ander Herrera, Ashley Young and Jesse Lingard out," Jose told MUTV. "I prefer the doctor to speak, but they are not in [the right] conditions.”

The fixture against Valencia, who registered their first La Liga win of the season at the weekend, looks an important one in terms of the make-up of Group H, after Marcelino's men were defeated by 10-man Juventus at the Mestalla in their opening match.

Jesse Lingard is unavailable for the clash against Valencia.

"The Champions League week is always a good week," said Mourinho. "Even if you expect a difficult match, a difficult opponent.

"It's a big week. Everyone wants to play [in the] Champions League, not everyone can do it. So we are here and we have the chance to play a big match. So, big match, big week."
