Manchester United's Under-21s edged Rangers B 1-0 in a closely contested friendly at the Glasgow club's training ground on Friday afternoon.

Ethan Wheatley's 16th-minute header ultimately proved enough to decide the match, following an international break when many of Travis Binnion's side represented their nations' respective youth sides.

Despite both teams threatening in the first half, Wheatley opened the scoring by converting with his head from a right-sided cross, giving United the advantage.

Rangers had further opportunities between the Reds' goal and half-time, but smart saves from United goalkeeper Elyh Harrison ensured Binnion's team carried a one-goal lead into the second 45 minutes.

After the restart, Ross McCausland struck a post as Rangers searched for a leveller, before Harrison denied Bailey Rice's free-kick.

United threatened on the counter-attack, with Mateo Mejia being denied by a superb last-ditch challenge from Leon King.

Despite the hosts' best efforts, good work from the young Reds' backline helped clinch victory.
