Under-19s: Manchester United v Bayern Munich

Tuesday 12 December 2023 15:55

Manchester United Under-19s were defeated 2-0 by Bayern Munich at Leigh Sports Village, as the young Reds concluded our 2023/24 UEFA Youth League campaign.

Javier Fernandez and Michael Scott scored for the visitors in a match where Travis Binnion's young players showed plenty of threat and fighting spirit.

Ethan Wheatley and Victor Musa both had good opportunities in either half, while Elyh Harrison made a series of important saves, as our Under-19s competed in yet another game that will aid their development.

The UEFA Youth League as a whole will no doubt have had a positive impact on the young Reds' football education.

The first half began with Bayern on the front foot, as Jonathan Jensen flashed an effort past the post.

The midfielder was then denied by Harrison, and the United goalkeeper also thwarted Adam Aznou after the full-back broke into the box down the left.

Wheatley created the Reds' first chance of the game, battling down the left before finding Malachi Sharpe in the middle, but his fellow attacker couldn't hit the target.

The first half was competitive, but with 25 minutes on the clock, the visitors took the lead.

Fernandez seized possession on the edge of the box, and the midfielder finished to put Bayern ahead.

Clear-cut chances were at a premium for the remainder of the first 45 minutes, with Sharpe flashing a dangerous ball across the face of goal.

The young Reds came flying out of the blocks in the second half and, when Wheatley got round his defender and made his way into the box, his shot was saved by Anthony Pavlesic.

From the resulting set-piece, Musa rose high to win a header and his attempt flew just past the far post.

The visitors responded and, after Willy Kambwala made an important tackle inside the box, Aznou's fierce drive was turned around the post by Harrison.

As the match entered the latter stages, substitute James Scanlon broke in behind the Bayern defence, but Pavlesic was able to come out and clear.

Scanlon then latched on to a loose ball in midfield and drove a low effort that screamed past the post.

But despite United's pressure, the visitors hit the young Reds with a sucker punch, when Scott fired a powerful shot into the net from outside the area.

Ethan Wheatley tries his luck.
