Under-18s: United v Liverpool

Tuesday 30 January 2024 21:36

Manchester United Under-18s came from behind twice before collecting a 4-3 victory over North West rivals Liverpool at Carrington, maintaining our perfect record in the U18 Premier League this season.

The match opened with end-to-end action in the early moments, but it was the visitors who made it count first when Trent Kane-Doherty curled an effort beyond Elyh Harrison following a quick left-wing break.

Ethan Wheatley fashioned our response just over 10 minutes later when he seized the ball in the box following a blocked Ethan Williams effort, before he fired home a volley from a tight angle to level the game.

Wheatley thought he'd put United ahead after getting on the end of a low cross minutes later but the goal was chalked off following an offside call.

Adam Lawrence's side had the best chances leading up to the interval but it was Liverpool that went into the break in front after Kieran Morrison hit a stoppage-time strike from outside the area moments before the referee's whistle.

Our young players wasted no time levelling the game once again minutes into the second half, this time courtesy of Jayce Fitzgerald, who received a low cross from Williams on the left side before he spun to drill a shot past Liverpool goalkeeper Kornel Misciur.

Williams notched a goal of his own less than 10 minutes later, putting the finishing touch on a low cross delivered by Ashton Missin, which gave United the lead for the first time in the game.

United substitute James Scanlon then made our second-half dominance count. He latched onto a Williams through-ball before he placed a shot into the far corner beyond the outstretched leg of Misciur.

Liverpool captain Mick Laffey did manage to poke home a consolation goal in the fifth minute of added time, but United's four goals proved enough to keep all three points at Carrington, holding on to our perfect run of 14 wins so far in the U18 Premier League.
