Why Scholes is a big fan of Fernandes

Wednesday 02 August 2023 09:00

Paul Scholes has praised club captain Bruno Fernandes for his versatility and vision in Manchester United’s midfield.

Scholes knows all about what it takes to be a versatile midfielder from his time at Old Trafford and as an England international, after lining up in the centre, as a number 10 or out wide.

During pre-season and Tour 2023, Fernandes has been deployed as part of a three-man midfield and on the right-flank, displaying his ability to flourish in a number of roles for the team

Our no.8 made three appearances on United’s pre-season tour of the US and scored the opening goal against Premier League rivals Arsenal in a 2-0 victory in New Jersey.

My Perfect Player | We challenged Scholesy to curate the attributes of 10 Reds, to create one unstoppable talent…

In our 'My Perfect Player' feature, which you can watch above, Scholes praises Bruno’s ability to perform to a high level in several midfield positions.

The Treble winner also commends Fernandes’s fearlessness and confidence to take risks with the ball, something he feels is part of the United way of playing.

“I think what Bruno has been doing for a couple of years now is he sees everything on a football pitch,” says Scholesy.
“He plays in that position, and he’s actually played a bit deeper. I love him in that role, I’m not sure it’s a role he would do year after year. I think he would like to get back into that number 10.

“I think his vision is brilliant. He’s not afraid to lose the ball, we all say at United, you have to be prepared to take risks, he’s prepared to do that, and we all know the ability he’s got.”
