Matic pleased with Carabao Cup progress

Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic is delighted to have sealed progress through to the Carabao Cup semi-finals after a 3-0 victory over Colchester United.

The Reds overcame the League Two side with three goals in 10 second-half minutes and will now face crosstown rivals Manchester City in the final four.

“Yeah, we are happy to be in the semi of course, we knew that they were going to defend well and play their best,” said Matic, who completed 90 minutes for the second time in the space of a week, after returning from injury.

“I think we played well most of the game. First half, we had complete control, we played round their box and we had chances to score. We scored the three goals in the second half. They made one great counter-attack and, after that, we scored in the next action.

“I'm happy we're in the semi-final. Hopefully we can make a good game in the semi-final and go to the final, of course.”

The Serbian has only recently returned to the side after two months out with injury, helping the Reds to convincing wins over AZ Alkmaar and Colchester.

In both games, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted for a mix of youth and experience, and Matic feels comfortable when it comes to guiding his younger counterparts, such as James Garner, whom he played alongside for the final half an hour.

“Of course, when I'm on the field I always try to do my best, I always try to help the team. When I'm on the pitch, I'm happy and I will continue to do my job.

“We have to be more consistent in our games, but this is normal for a young team without experience.

“This is normal and I'm sure those young guys in our changing room - they are the future of Manchester United."
