Opinion: Our best Premier League goals v Liverpool?

Tuesday 09 April 2024 16:00

Ahead of last weekend’s Old Trafford showdown with Liverpool, we painstakingly went through over three decades of action to decipher our top 20 Premier League goals against our old rivals. Now, after Sunday’s rollercoaster draw, we have to update it already. Typical.

Not that we’re complaining too much, having witnessed two goals of pure excellence from Erik ten Hag’s men. The only hard work came in figuring out where to place the new entries from Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo.

With particular apologies to Marcus Rashford and Ji-sung Park, whose well-worked goals from 2021 and 2010 respectively drop out to accommodate the newcomers, there was a fair bit of shunting to do, since Sunday’s efforts come in right near the top of the chart.

There was also the secondary debate: which of the two goals is better?

Bruno may well feel aggrieved to have scored from inside the centre-circle, yet not be judged the scorer of the game’s best goal but, arguably, Kobbie’s goal was slightly more difficult.

When Jarell Quansah errantly teed up Fernandes, the Portuguese’s quick thinking allowed him to immediately conclude that he had various options in how to hit an essentially unguarded target.

He went for the sublime faded drive just inside the post when, in reality, goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher was out of the picture since, being outside his area, a successful save with his hands would have resulted in a red card.

Bypass the keeper, hit the target, job done. Sounds easy, doesn’t it?

Mainoo, meanwhile, was faced not only by a goalkeeper in position, but one protected by two outfielders. Curtis Jones’s placement and proximity meant that a near-post effort was out of the question, especially with Quansah stationed directly behind his colleague. Every shooting option was out, bar one: the far-corner curler.

To comprehend that while switching from a left-footed control and set, to a right-footed attempt, without even looking at goal, in a game of such magnitude, is near-unfathomable.

That’s why, when reassessing the entire top 20 and looking for appropriate slots for these two staggering efforts borne of outrageously fleet minds and skilled feet, they had to come in right near the top of the chart.

For our money, only the spectacular efforts of Juan Mata and Dimitar Berbatov deserve to sit above them in the Premier League annals.

However, these lists are – as ever – entirely subjective, so there’s no right, no wrong, just brilliance to behold again and again.

Here's hoping we get to revisit the list again next season.
