Paul Pogba scores at Fulham.

Our picks for the Goal of the Season

Sunday 16 May 2021 08:00

There may be 20 contenders on a rather lengthy shortlist for the 2020/21 Manchester United Goal of the Season but our media team feel a select few are genuinely in the running for the prize.

We are keen to canvass your opinion so make sure you get involved in the voting, if you haven't already, but here are the thoughts of some of our staff, having had the pleasure of seeing the Reds bang in so many goals this term.

One goal picked up more support than any of the others but do you agree with these personal assessments?

Make sure you watch all 20 of the contenders before casting your vote for Goal of the Season...

Adam Bostock: Paul Pogba v. West Ham (A)
"Three days after a home defeat to PSG endangered our Champions League lives, the Reds needed a Premier League lift in London - not to go 1-0 down to David Moyes's improving side. When Ole brought on Bruno Fernandes for the second half, Paul Pogba was the first to profit, smashing in a sizzling equaliser from outside the box after his fellow playmaker had controlled Dean Henderson's long clearance and cut inside to tee him up. We went on to win 3-1, of course."

Sam Carney: Amad v. AC Milan (H)
"One of just two United goals I’ve been privileged enough to see live this season, I’ve picked Amad’s header against Milan because of the view I had and, well, the fact it was just a bit different. Social media instantly brought up Chicharito’s goal at Stoke from 2010, but I think this was an even tougher technique to master, as our young Ivorian flicked Bruno’s delicious dink up and over giant goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from as far out as the penalty spot. And all that with his back to goal! An impudent finish and one that has grown in importance as we sneaked through the tie and eventually claimed our place in the Europa League final."

Jordan Eyre: Paul Pogba v. Fulham (A)
"When Paul plucked the ball out of the night sky back in January, tight to the touchline and with little room for manoeuvre, few could have anticipated what would happen next. Pogba evaded two Fulham challenges to find a pocket of space on the edge of the area, gave the Fulham goal only a fleeting glance and steadied himself to unleash a strike with his weaker left foot that arced perfectly into the far corner. The strike was a timely reminder that at his roaring best, United’s World Cup-winning midfielder can produce Goal of the Season contenders with alarming ease."

Mark Froggatt: Edinson Cavani v. Tottenham (A)
"For the record, I agree with a few of my colleagues in choosing Fernandes at Newcastle, but for the sake of variety and frankly a more interesting article, I’m eulogising about my second-favourite strike of the season. I adore this moment and for a number of reasons: partly because of the Bruno nutmeg, instinctive Mason Greenwood cross and deft Cavani header, but mainly due to the injustice of the preceding events. El Matador had seen a great goal ludicrously disallowed by VAR and, as you’ll recall, Spurs took a shock lead moments later, prompting an angry response from Ole’s Reds in north London. Fred equalised and our glorious no.7 put us in front with a well-timed nod, that deserved the visceral away end celebrations that we’ve so sorely missed this campaign."

Joe Ganley: Bruno Fernandes v. Newcastle (A)
"You never get away from what first draws you to football. And for me, that was the lightning-quick United counter-attacks of the early ’90s. Ole has brought that back: we’ve scored so many beautiful, rapid breakaway goals since he became manager that I could pick out several outstanding candidates from this season alone. But my choice for 2020/21 is our second in October’s 4-1 victory over Newcastle, scored by Bruno. Box to box in seconds, beautifully intuitive touches by numerous players, all done at warp speed… glorious. Like the great Eric Cantona goals, the more you watch it back, the more the paranoia kicks in: has this all been scripted and choreographed by some kind of string-pulling footballing deity? Probably not, but this was an impossibly perfect goal."

Lars Magnus Igland Roys: Bruno Fernandes v. Newcastle (A)
"There’s been plenty of great goals this season, so this was a tough decision. Edinson Cavani’s injury-time winner against Southampton, Paul Pogba’s screamer at Craven Cottage and Marcus Rashford’s winner in Paris all come to mind. But, for me, Bruno Fernandes’s goal away at Newcastle is the pick of the bunch. It’s a classic United counter-attack with back-heel flicks, clever movement and fast-paced forward passing with an unbelievable strike into the top far corner to finish it off. No wonder they call him the Portuguese magnifico because that goal was just magical, from start to finish!"

Adam Marshall: Bruno Fernandes v. Newcastle (A)
"I'm lucky that I've been able to see a few of our goals in the flesh this season and this is one that will always stick in my mind. In the surreal atmosphere of a silent St James' Park, there was a lot riding on Bruno as he ran through on goal to cap the slickest of moves with an unerring finish into the top corner. There was no margin for error but he backed himself to hit the target with deadly accuracy. The Portuguese star had scored a beauty in the first half that was disallowed and this was proof he really was on top form that night in Newcastle."

Mark Sullivan: Bruno Fernandes v. Everton (H)
"I'll go for Bruno against Everton. I know we didn't end up winning the game but I loved it for the way he nonchalantly bent it over the keeper, Robin Olsen, and into the far corner of the net. There is also the fact that it reminded me a little of the famous Eric Cantona chip against Sunderland at Old Trafford."
