Under-18s: Sunderland v United

Saturday 23 September 2023 12:31

Late drama in Manchester United's Under-18 Premier League North game against Sunderland saw our young Reds leave the Academy of Light with a thrilling 3-2 victory.

Adam Lawrence's side opened the scoring in the 14th minute, after being awarded a penalty for a foul on our no.10, Shea Lacey, by Sunderland left-back Jenson Jones.

Reds forward Victor Musa stepped up to the spot, slotting a left-footed strike past goalkeeper Daniel Cameron to put United ahead.

Sunderland started quickly after the break, taking just four minutes of the second half to find an equaliser. From outside the box, Black Cats forward Thomas Watson fired a shot just out of the reach of United goalkeeper Thomas Myles and into the top-left corner.

Our young Reds emerged victorious in a close-fought contest at the Academy of Light.

In the 72nd minute, the ball fell to Ashton Missin inside the Sunderland box, and his shot benefitted from a slight deflection to roll past opposition goalkeeper Daniel Cameron and put the Reds ahead again.

It took our hosts less than ten minutes to get back on level terms for the second time in the game. A cross into the United box travelled past Myles and was eventually met by Sunderland left-back Jensen Jones on the line to seal the equaliser.

The game looked to be heading for a draw until deep into stoppage time when Sunderland ‘keeper Cameron spilled a pass at the feet of United skipper Finley McAllister, who was left to fire home the last minute winner into an open goal and confirm the Reds' victory.
