Under-21s: United v Newcastle

Saturday 16 December 2023 17:10

Manchester United Under-21s came out on top in a back-and-forth Premier League 2 contest at Carrington this afternoon, triumphing 3-2.

Two of the game's five goals were scored inside the first three minutes, after James Huntley equalised for the visitors, following James Nolan's opener inside the inaugural 60 seconds.

The young Reds were back ahead just after the quarter-of-an-hour mark however, when Joe Hugill converted from the penalty spot, after Mateo Mejia was brought down inside the 18-yard area.

United continued to look to widen the advantage in the lead-up to half-time and came close to the afternoon's fourth goal via a Sam Mather free-kick that hit the crossbar on the stroke of half-time.

Reaction from Travis Binnion follows highlights of an entertaining Premier League 2 duel between United and Newcastle...

Having gone in ahead at the midway point, Travis Binnion's team were pegged back early in the second half when Dylan Stephenson got on the end of Joshua Scott's dangerous delivery from the left-hand side, and finished to make it 2-2.

The young Reds would nudge ahead for the third time on the afternoon just before the hour mark though, when captain Shola Shoretire showed composure with a successful strike, after some good work from Mejia out wide.

That effort would prove to be the contest's decisive moment, helped in particular by Tom Wooster in the United goal at the other end, ensuring our Under-21s would make it four games unbeaten in Premier League 2 with a second successive win.
