Confirmed: Chelsea v United in the Carabao Cup

Thursday 03 October 2019 10:00

The date and kick-off time for Manchester United’s Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Chelsea has been confirmed.

After some speculation about when the fixture in west London would take place, it has now been scheduled for Wednesday 30 October at 20:05 BST.

The highly anticipated match at Stamford Bridge will be broadcast on Sky Sports in the UK.  Liverpool's tie against Arsenal will also be shown live on that evening, at the earlier time of 19:30 BST.

United will no doubt feel confident about beating Chelsea, after securing an impressive 4-0 win over the Blues in their opening match of the Premier League season back in August.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s Reds also won at Stamford Bridge in last season’s Emirates FA Cup, securing an excellent 2-0 win over the Blues in the fifth round.

HOW WE PROGRESSED

United reached the fourth round of the Carabao Cup by beating Rochdale in a dramatic penalty shootout at Old Trafford in September, following a 1-1 draw in normal time.

Academy graduate Mason Greenwood had opened the scoring that night with a finely-taken finish on 68 minutes, before opposition teenager Luke Matheson equalised just moments later.

The fourth-round draw was completed afterwards, producing these ties:

Aston Villa v Wolverhampton Wanderers
Burton Albion v Leicester City
Crawley Town v Colchester United
Chelsea v MANCHESTER UNITED
Everton v Watford
Liverpool v Arsenal
Manchester City v Southampton
Oxford United v Sunderland

BRING ON THE CHALLENGE

Speaking after the third-round win over Rochdale, Solskjaer looked forward to facing Chelsea and was clearly not bothered about the fixture slotting in among a batch of other away games.

“If you want to win it, you have to beat the best,” said Ole. “We played Chelsea in the first game of the season this year, we played them in the FA Cup last year.

“And it slots nicely into a couple of weeks with lots of travelling [United travel to Partizan Belgrade, Norwich City, Chelsea and Bournemouth in 10 days]. That’s how it is.

“We’ve got to make the best out of it, and I’m sure we will because that’s the type of group this is and that’s the type of club we are. We’re going to relish it and look forward to it.”
