Anthony Martial in action against Tottenham in Shanghai.

Martial voted Man of the Match in win over Spurs

Thursday 25 July 2019 16:23

Goalscorer Anthony Martial picked up Manchester United’s Man of the Match award, as voted for by the fans, after the 2-1 win over Tottenham Hotspur in Shanghai.

The Frenchman latched on to a sublime through-ball from Andreas Pereira to squeeze a shot past Paulo Gazzaniga and open the scoring in the 21st minute.

It was his second goal of Tour 2019, after netting from the penalty spot in our 4-0 win over Leeds United.

Martial was unfortunate to hit the post earlier with a left-footed shot and was lively throughout the first half, making many penetrating runs in behind the defence.

Tony lined up as the spearhead of a three-pronged attack, flanked by Mason Greenwood and Daniel James, before being replaced by Marcus Rashford at the break.

Former United striker Andy Cole, working as a pundit for MUTV, chose Martial along with fellow goalscorer Angel Gomes and Scott McTominay as our three Man of the Match nominees.

Our no.11 received 45 per cent of the final vote in the Official App to emerge the winner, ahead of Gomes in second place with 31 per cent and McTominay in third with 24 per cent.

Aside from his goal, Tony had three shots in total, completed nine passes and touched the ball 19 times during his 45-minute display.

Speaking to MUTV after the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pleased with Martial’s goal and performance.

“He played well,” said the boss. “He was unlucky a couple of times when he was played through by Andy [Pereira] – left foot strike [which hit the post]. I don’t think it’s a foul when he closes the centre-back down too. So great work-out by Anthony, so very happy with his performance.”
