Bournemouth v United: Match preview

Friday 01 November 2019 05:00

Manchester United visit Bournemouth in the Saturday lunchtime kick-off, aiming to make it four wins in a row on the road in all competitions.

We beat the Cherries 2-1 in our last trip to the Vitality Stadium, almost a year ago to the day, and will be hoping to bring an excellent fortnight to a close with another victory in the Premier League.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the game, which kicks off at 12:30 GMT...

HOW CAN I FOLLOW THE GAME?

The match will be available to watch live on BT Sport and the BT Sport app, although MUTV subscribers will be able to watch live dedicated build-up to the game in the Match Day show, followed by live radio commentary. You can also follow our coverage on ManUtd.com and the Official App, where you can track live data and player statistics in the Match Centre. MUTV will be showing a full re-run of the game the following day.

WHAT'S OUR RECORD LIKE AGAINST BOURNEMOUTH?

This will be our 17th fixture against the south coast side. Eight of the previous 16 have come in cup competitions, with the other eight taking place in the Premier League. Since Eddie Howe’s men were promoted to the top-flight for the first time in their history in 2015, they have beaten United just once, with the Reds winning on six of the other seven encounters, including our last three sojourns to Dorset. We completed the double over the Cherries last season, winning 2-1 at the Vitality Stadium in November, followed by a resounding 4-1 triumph at Old Trafford in our final game of 2018.

FORM GUIDE

United go into the game level on points with the hosts, who sit two places below us due to their slightly inferior goal difference. The Reds have picked up three wins away from home in the last week, including a 3-1 victory over Norwich City at Carrow Road on Sunday. Bournemouth will be looking for their first win since 20 September when they welcome us this weekend. The Cherries started the season well, taking 10 points from their opening six games, but they’ve failed to score in any of their last three and have only won twice at home in the league since the end of January, against Tottenham in May and Everton earlier this season.

Manager watch
says

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe is the second longest-serving manager in English league football (behind Wycombe’s Gareth Ainsworth), having been appointed in October 2012.

TEAM NEWS

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed on Sunday that Paul Pogba will be sidelined until December with an ankle injury picked up towards the end of September. Luke Shaw, who last played in August, and Nemanja Matic – out for the majority of October – made a trip to Dubai last week in a bid to regain fitness, while Axel Tuanzebe and Diogo Dalot have also been missing recently. The former picked up a hip injury during the warm-up before the game against Liverpool, while Dalot hasn’t played since being substituted at St James Park on 6 October. Eric Bailly is still a long-term absentee after undergoing knee surgery in the summer.

For Eddie Howe’s men, the mercurial David Brooks is still recovering after missing the opening two months of the campaign with an ankle problem. Dan Gosling is also yet to feature this term after undergoing hip surgery in July. Charlie Daniels and Junior Stanislas remain sidelined with knee injuries for the Cherries.

PLAYER TO WATCH

Callum Wilson is the Cherries’ highest scorer this season, with five goals in nine Premier League appearances, including a brace against Everton. The England international is a threat both on and off the ball, making space for himself and others at set pieces, where the likes of Nathan Ake pose a particular danger. Wilson netted in this fixture last season, although goals from Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford saw us turn the game around and clinch all three points.

WHO’S THE REFEREE?

Lancashire’s Chris Kavanagh will officiate Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off, with Sian Massey-Ellis and Constantine Hatzidakis as his assistants and David Webb as the fourth official. This will be the first time Kavanagh has refereed a United match. Mike Dean is VAR official at Stockley Park, and he has Stephen Child as his assistant.

Wilson was on target in this fixture last season.
