Williams ruled out with foot problem

Manchester United defender Brandon Williams has been forced out of the England Under-21 squad due to injury.

The homegrown youth product enjoyed a meteoric rise last term, forcing his way into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's plans and starting both the quarter-final and semi-final of the Europa League in Germany.

He also signed a new long-term contract recently to commit his future to the club he supported as a boy.

Unfortunately, the 19-year-old is nursing a minor foot problem that means he cannot join up with Aidy Boothroyd's squad for the European Championship qualifiers against Kosovo and Austria.

It would have been a step up for the full-back, whose previous international experience has come at Under-20 level.

Williams only made his senior debut last term, as a substitute in the Carabao Cup win over Rochdale at Old Trafford, but has quickly racked up the appearances for Solskjaer's side.

He has 17 Premier League outings to his name, including a maiden goal in the 3-3 draw at Sheffield United, plus another 19 in other competitions to give him a total of 36 first-team games in 2019/20.

When the Reds return to prepare for next season, which is set to begin at Crystal Palace on 19 September, the defender will be aiming to build on a hugely successful breakthrough campaign.
