Bruno: We're closer to trophies with Ronaldo

Wednesday 08 September 2021 14:44

Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes believes the signing of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo increases the likelihood of the Reds claiming silverware this season.

Our no.18 knows Cristiano well from their time together with Portugal and has also been credited with playing a key part in convincing the 36-year-old to return to United after 12 years away.

Ronaldo's transfer from Juventus has dominated the football headlines ever since being announced a fortnight ago, with everyone now looking forward to his potential second debut, when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side take on Newcastle at the weekend.

Although Fernandes has been out of the country and has not yet worked at Carrington with his international team-mate, it’s clear that he feels the same buzz around the transfer as the rest of us.

And he believes Ronaldo’s legendary winning mentality will only help boost the desire of an already hungry United squad.

“We know the enthusiasm will be red hot, everyone knows Cristiano is in the house,” Bruno said, while away with the Selecao.

“Everyone is very confident and happy that he is back, the players too.

“We know what he can give us, and our focus, like Cristiano’s, is to win.

“With him, we know we are closer to winning [trophies].”

It’s been a fruitful international break for our Portuguese pair.

Ronaldo broke the men’s international goalscoring record with a brace in World Cup qualifying against Ireland, before he joined up with his new team-mates in Manchester.

Fernandes stayed with the squad for the friendly with Qatar and qualifier versus Azerbaijan, netting a penalty in the former and then assisting a goal for Bernardo Silva as Fernando Santos’s side took charge of Group A.
