Confirmed: Daniel James' United squad number

We can officially confirm that new signing Daniel James will wear the no.21 shirt for Manchester United.

The young Wales international has inherited the number from the departing Ander Herrera, who had been its previous occupant for five years.


James joined the Reds last month from Swansea City, penning a five-year deal at Old Trafford. He has since been followed into the club by Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who will wear no.29

The new home shirt for 2019/20 with 'James 21' on the back is now available to buy from adidas.com, and the winger could wear his jersey for the first time during our pre-season friendlies. The opening fixture takes place on Saturday 13 July against Perth Glory at 12:00 BST.


Upon signing for the Reds, James said: “This is one of the best days of my life and a challenge I am really looking forward to. The Premier League is the best league in the world and Manchester United is the perfect place for me to continue to develop as a player.”


United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also added: “Daniel is an exciting young winger with lots of skills, vision, exceptional pace and a good work ethic. He had a great season with Swansea City and has all the attributes needed to become a Manchester United player.”

James will be the seventh United player to wear 21 since squad numbers were introduced for the Premier League's second season, 1993/94. Check out all of his predecessors below…
Ander Herrera: The Spaniard inherited the jersey in 2014 after joining from Athletic Club. He spent five seasons at Old Trafford, before announcing his departure in May. In that time, Herrera won the Emirates FA Cup in 2016 and played a huge role the following season, as the Reds claimed the FA Community Shield, Carabao Cup and UEFA Europa League. The midfielder was also voted the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year that campaign.

Rafael da Silva: After joining the club in 2008, along with twin brother Fabio, Rafael claimed the no.21. However, the defender only held that shirt until 2012, when he elected to wear the no.2 shirt that was previously worn by Gary Neville. During a seven-year stint at Old Trafford, Rafa won three Premier League titles (2009, 2011 and 2013), the League Cup (2010) and FIFA Club World Cup (2008).

Dong Fangzhuo: Dong spent four years at United, although the first two were spent on loan at Belgian side Royal Antwerp. The Chinese striker made three appearances as a Red, including a 0-0 Premier League draw at Stamford Bridge in 2007, when he partnered Ole Gunner Solskjaer for the already-confirmed champions. In 2008, Dong left the Reds and rejoined former club Dalian Shide.

Diego Forlan: The striker joined United in 2002 from Argentinian side Independiente and went on to play 98 games for the Reds, netting on 17 occasions. He is most fondly remembered for his brace at Anfield in our 2-1 victory against Liverpool on 1 December 2002. Forlan departed Old Trafford in 2004 to sign for Villarreal, but he also played for Atletico Madrid and Inter Milan in Europe, and won the Europa League during his time in the Spanish capital. The Uruguayan also claimed the European Golden Boot award in 2005 and 2009 respectively, and was the top scorer at the 2010 World Cup.
Henning Berg is one of seven United players who have worn the no.21 shirt.
Henning Berg: He is one of the few players to win the Premier League with two sides - having previous claimed the title with Blackburn Rovers. In three full seasons with United, the Norwegian played 103 games and scored three goals. As well as winning the Treble, Berg also helped the Reds claim the 1999/00 Premier League title.

Pat McGibbon: The man from Northern Ireland signed for the Reds in 1992 from Irish Premiership club, Portadown, and spent five years at Old Trafford. He played just once, in a 1995 League Cup clash against York City, before the defender departed in 1997 to join Wigan Athletic.
