De Gea exclusive: We must maintain this level

Thursday 05 December 2019 08:43

David De Gea has called on his Manchester United team-mates to carry the excellent performance against Tottenham Hotspur into Saturday’s much-anticipated Manchester derby.

The Reds put on a superb showing against Spurs on Wednesday, to record a 2-1 win over the North London side thanks to a Marcus Rashford brace.

However, the one-goal victory does not tell the full story of the game at Old Trafford, where Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side controlled the play and could have scored several more goals beneath the floodlights.

"This was a massive win for us, so let's keep this level and keep winning," says a delighted David De Gea...

After such a convincing performance against one of the country’s top sides, David is hopeful the Reds can maintain that level at the Etihad Stadium this weekend.

“I think we controlled the game really well,” the Spaniard told us after the victory over Spurs. “It’s a massive win for us and let’s see if we can keep this level and keep winning.

“It’s a special game against Man City, the derby. Let’s see if we can win there. It’s a tough game but if we show the same as we did tonight, we will have chances to win.”
After scoring twice and winning our Man of the Match award, Rashford was the toast of Old Trafford on Wednesday and De Gea was extremely impressed by what he saw from his 22-year-old team-mate.

“Marcus is in very good form and showing his talent," said the no.1. "He is a great finisher. he scored two and could have scored even more goals. We are happy that he is scoring goals for us and playing as he is doing. He is a great player.”

Marcus Rashford's double against Spurs gave us our fifth league win of the season, in December...

Wednesday’s result means United climbed above Tottenham in the table and moved into sixth.

While there is still a significant gap to the top four, David knows how important wins against the club's rivals could be in the race for a Champions League spot.

“We needed the three points tonight,” said De Gea. “We played against a very good team with good players and today we showed we are capable of winning against a good opponent.

“We showed that we can play well, that we can score goals, create chances and play offensively. It was a great game for us.”
