Goalkeeper Henderson looking to make history

The 22-year-old, who is loan at Sheffield United, has been promoted to Gareth Southgate's squad, ahead of the Euro 2020 qualifiers with Czech Republic and Bulgaria. 

He replaces a former Red in Tom Heaton, as the Aston Villa keeper has pulled out due to injury.

Only five men have previously donned the gloves for the Three Lions while being contracted to United and none of them made more than three appearances for their country as Reds.

Henderson has impressed in his first season in the top flight, with the Blades, and bounced back from a costly mistake in the defeat to Liverpool with a fine showing, and clean sheet, during the weekend draw at Watford. The homegrown Academy product signed a new contract at Old Trafford in the summer and, according to OptaJoe, he has kept more clean sheets in league football since the start of last season than any other keeper in the top four domestic divisions.

Gary Bailey - 2 caps (1985)

The blond United no.1 grew up in South Africa but was born in Ipswich, where his father Roy played in goal. He was a regular in the England Under-21s but faced stiff competition for the senior jersey from Ray Clemence and Peter Shilton. Nonetheless, he won two caps, against Republic of Ireland and Mexico, in 1985 - the same year he claimed his second FA Cup with the Reds. A year later, he was named in the World Cup squad. Bailey departed United for Kaizer Chiefs in 1988.

Ben Foster - 3 caps (2009)

Steve McClaren initially introduced Foster to his England squad while the keeper was on loan at Watford but Fabio Capello called him up in 2009 after a fine display in the League Cup final against Tottenham. With Rob Green and David James out, he was drafted in and kept a clean sheet against Belarus before a 1-0 defeat to Brazil. The 36-year-old left Old Trafford for Birmingham City in 2010 and is currently back with Watford.

Jack Mew - 1 cap (1920)

The Sunderland-born shot-stopper earned a single cap for his country, against Ireland, and kept a clean sheet. He spent 14 years with United and was only one game short of 200 appearances for the club.

Alex Stepney - 1 cap (1968)

A week before he won the European Cup with Sir Matt Busby's men, the Londoner made his international bow in a friendly against Sweden. He was part of Sir Alf Ramsey's squad at the 1970 World Cup finals and was on the bench for the 3-2 defeat to West Germany in the quarter-final after Gordon Banks was ruled out due to illness. A stalwart at Old Trafford, the keeper amassed 539 appearances for the club.

Ray Wood - 3 caps (1954-56)

Before surviving the Munich Air Disaster, he was capped by his country at the age of 23, making his debut against Northern Ireland. The former Darlington man also appeared in internationals with Wales and Finland. Wood, who broke his jaw in the 1957 FA Cup final against Aston Villa but returned to play outfield at Wembley, racked up 208 United matches in total.
