Early team news for Aston Villa v United

Thursday 13 January 2022 13:00

Manchester United will be without Luke Shaw and Scott McTominay for the visit to Aston Villa on Saturday.

The pair are suspended for one Premier League game after accumulating their fifth bookings in the competition this term during the recent defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford.

Alex Telles is likely to be a leading contender to come in at left-back and McTominay, who scored the winner in the Emirates FA Cup third-round win over the Villans last time out, will need replacing in the heart of the midfield, with a few options available to interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

Victor Lindelof returned after a COVID-enforced absence for the cup victory, while Harry Maguire and Phil Jones will hopefully be fit again for the weekend.

However, Eric Bailly, like Hannibal, is away on Africa Cup of Nations duty in Cameroon.

Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho were not risked on Monday night due to muscular problems, but CR7 has revealed he is confident of being able to return.

Diogo Dalot sustained a nasty gash to his ankle but played on for the full 90 minutes of the tie.

ASTON VILLA UPDATE

Influential midfielder John McGinn, like Shaw and McTominay, is suspended after also picking up a fifth yellow card of the Premier League season.

The Scotland international joins Marvelous Nakamba and Leon Bailey on the sidelines, although former Red Ashley Young is believed to be closing on a return.

Although Bertrand Traore and Trezeguet are participating at the Africa Cup of Nations, the Midlands have completed the signing of Philippe Coutinho, on loan from Barcelona, and the ex-Liverpool man could make his debut.

Villa boss Steven Gerrard is active in the transfer market and full-back Lucas Digne is also in line to feature, after finalising a switch from Everton.

Meanwhile, Calub Chukwuemeka has been loaned to Livingston for the rest of the campaign.
