Bruno Fernandes during his first Manchester United training session.

Eight things we learned from Bruno’s first day

Friday 31 January 2020 23:21

Bruno Fernandes has had an extremely busy, but enjoyable, first day as a Manchester United player.

With so much new information to take in on our new signing over the past 24 hours, we’ve rounded up everything you may have missed…

SPEAKING TO CRISTIANO

Bruno revealed in our exclusive interview that he had a brief chat with ex-Red Cristiano Ronaldo before signing for the United. “He just said good things about United,” Fernandes told us. “He said he started living his dream here and he started being a really good player here. I think he is happy with my transfer.”

The midfielder is, of course, following in the same steps as Ronaldo by joining United from Sporting and admitted he remembers that 2003 transfer well. “Now I want to write my history, different to Cristiano because he is the best player in the world,” he said. “He has played 15 years at the top and it’s difficult to do this.”

NANI’S MESSAGE

Another former Portuguese Red sent Bruno and the United fans a message.

“I just want to wish good luck to Bruno Fernandes, who has just moved to Manchester,” Nani said in a video you can watch on our Official App.

“I ask you guys to give him your good support,” he added, to the United faithful. “Have a little bit of passion for his adaptation, for sure he will prove his quality and score beautiful goals. I am missing you guys, the great moments we had and the good times.”

FRIENDS ACROSS THE CITY

Bruno also revealed that he already has a mate in Manchester: Bernardo Silva. Our new signing is even looking forward to locking horns with Silva and Manchester City, in the coming weeks.

“He [Bernardo] texted me on Wednesday and said I was lucky I didn’t play against him,” Bruno said with a smile. “I told him the luck was with him because if I’d played against him I will punish him,” he added, with a chuckle.
SQUAD NUMBER

One of United’s all-time great midfielders - Paul Scholes - wore the number 18 jersey for the club and Bruno has also decided to select that shirt.

“When I grew up, I saw Paul Scholes playing in it and, for me, having this shirt and this number of an amazing player is something I will enjoy.”

DALOT’S LIFT

Bruno may not be entirely sure how to get to the Aon Training Complex, which is understandable, so he enlisted some help on his first day of training. Fellow Portuguese Diogo Dalot kindly offered him a lift on Friday morning and the United defender even posted a picture on his Instagram story of the pair, en route to the morning session.

FIRST TRAINING SESSION

With match fitness no issue for Fernandes, he was instantly involved in the thick of things on Friday. Our new no.18 fitted in seamlessly during his first session and our cameras caught him laughing and joking with his team-mates.

The lads were hugely impressed with his skill and technical ability, while Anthony Martial said he is looking forward to playing with such a creative talent, as revealed in an exclusive interview you can see on Saturday morning on our website and app.

READY FOR WOLVES

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed in his pre-match press conference that Bruno could feature against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday - just two days after signing. “He's fit enough to play and he'll be involved definitely, the boss told reporters. “He’ll be in the squad. I don't know how much he will be involved, but he's in the squad.”

FACING HIS HERO

Wolves are renowned for their Portuguese contingent and Bruno will come up against several international team-mates at Old Trafford this weekend.

One player the 25-year-old is looking forward to locking horns with is his boyhood idol, Joao Moutinho.“He’s one of the players I follow because I like his style of play,” Fernandes told our media channels. “Since I was a kid, he was one of the players in Portugal who was one of the most important there. I followed him like I followed other idols.”
