Eric Bailly

Solskjaer provides an update on Bailly

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed Eric Bailly with be unavailable for three to four weeks with the injury that prevented him from facing Paris Saint-Germain.

The Ivory Coast international was on the bench for last weekend’s 4-1 win over Newcastle United but did not travel to France for our UEFA Champions League opener at Parc des Princes.

Instead, Bailly watched the action from home as the Reds secured an impressive 2-1 win over the Ligue 1 champions thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford.

Speaking to reporters after the final whistle in Paris, Ole admitted he does not expect Eric to feature again until the next international break – which begins following our trip to Everton on 7 November.

That estimation from the manager suggests our tough-tackling no.3 is set to miss upcoming fixtures against Chelsea, RB Leipzig, Arsenal, Basaksehir and the aforementioned Toffees.

In October 2020, we once again beat PSG in France, thanks to goals from Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford...

News of Bailly’s injury is a blow for Solskjaer with Harry Maguire also out with a slight problem, although the club captain could return for this weekend’s Premier League match against Chelsea at Old Trafford.

It will be interesting to see who starts against Frank Lampard’s Blues after an impressive defensive performance versus PSG, featuring a central trio of Axel Tuanzebe, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and new signing Alex Telles operating as wing-backs.

Tuanzebe had not played a competitive match since December 2019, yet somehow produced an incredible display to keep opposition forwards Angel Di Maria, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe quiet.
Axel was praised by Solskjaer, David De Gea and Marcus Rashford following the final whistle, and his return to action is excellent news for the squad going forward, with so many big games coming up.

Speaking on BT Sport, club legend Rio Ferdinand also highlighted Tuanzebe’s strong outing and was clear in his assessment when asked if Axel has played his way into the team.

“Yes,” said Ferdinand. “Ole has just said he's snuffed out two of the best strikers in the world. You have to reward performances. He's had a hard time with injuries, his first game in 10 months but to come in and play like that, you have to be rewarded.”
