Ten Hag's team news update for Leicester

Friday 17 February 2023 16:30

Erik ten Hag has provided a brief update on his squad, as Manchester United's attention turns to the Premier League visit of Leicester City on Sunday (14:00 GMT kick-off).

The team flew back to Manchester late on Thursday evening, following the thrilling 2-2 draw with Barcelona at the Nou Camp, with Friday focused on recovery before the Foxes come to town.

Antony, Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay were absent from the trip due to injury, although Ten Hag suggested earlier this week that all three were making progress in their recoveries.

The boss feels that more time on the training pitches is required before he can decide on whether any of the trio can come back into the squad against Leicester, however.

“Maybe. We have to wait until tomorrow. Maybe one or two players can return, yeah,” he told club media on Friday afternoon.

Here's everything you need to know ahead of the Reds' clash with Brendan Rodgers' side this weekend.

Midfielder Casemiro, who enjoyed returning to Spain following his move from Real Madrid last summer, will unfortunately miss this fixture as he serves the final game of his three-match domestic ban.

Lisandro Martinez and Marcel Sabitzer are back in contention though, having sat out of the trip to Catalonia due to one-game yellow-card suspensions.

“You don’t want to miss them in the squad, in Barcelona. They are important players for our team,” Ten Hag told club media when asked about the pair.

“They are back in the squad, which is good. That will strengthen the squad, so we will have a good team on Sunday.”

Christian Eriksen and Donny van de Beek are still ruled out with long-term problems.

LEICESTER TEAM NEWS

Brendan Rodgers appeared before the media on Friday afternoon and revealed that James Maddison was ‘fine’ and training well ahead of Sunday’s game.

Maddison has scored in each of the Foxes’ last two Premier League outings – a 4-2 win at Aston Villa and the 4-1 victory over Tottenham – since returning from a knee injury but the England international has reportedly been managing another issue in recent weeks.

Youri Tielemans (calf) and Boubakary Soumare (hamstring) have both been working on the grass at Leicester’s Seagrave training ground and could return this weekend, while right-back Ricardo Pereira is available again following an Achilles tendon rupture.

Unfortunately, former Red Jonny Evans will not be able to enjoy an Old Trafford return as he is still struggling with a thigh problem.
