Ten Hag discusses Maguire and Mazraoui injuries

Sunday 06 October 2024 17:12

Erik ten Hag was asked about the substitutions of Harry Maguire and Noussair Mazraoui following the conclusion of United's Premier League game against Aston Villa.

The defensive pair were both withdrawn at half-time at Villa Park, with Maguire in clear discomfort following a set-piece for the hosts in the closing stages of the first 45.

Noussair Mazraoui, like Maguire, also failed to reappear for the second period, with Victor Lindelof and Matthijs de Ligt sent on to fulfill the right-back and right-sided centre-half roles, respectively.

After the full-time whistle, manager Erik ten Hag was questioned about the pair, and confirmed that both were replaced due to physical issues.

Ten Hag told the BBC after the goalless draw: "We have to take them off at half-time. Tomorrow we have to see what is the diagnosis on it."

He added in his post-match interview with MUTV: "We have to assess this. I can’t tell you now what the issue is. I know what the issue is but [I cannot say now] how good or bad it is. We have to see assess this tomorrow [Monday] and then we will bring you news."

The boss confirmed in his post-match press conference that Maguire and Jonny Evans played at Villa Park due to rotation.

Maguire - who scored the stoppage-time equaliser at FC Porto on Thursday night - was not selected by interim manager Lee Carsley in the England squad for forthcoming Nations League matches against Greece and Finland.

Moroccan full-back Mazraoui has started every league match and been a consistent performer since he joined the Reds from Bayern Munich in August.

The Reds are next in action against Brentford at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday 19 October.
