Nathan Bishop has penned a new Manchester United contract and the young goalkeeper has set his sights on a number of targets for the coming few years.

The 21-year-old stopper has signed a new deal until June 2023 with an option for a further year. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also confirmed on Monday that Bishop, who signed from Southend United a year ago, will shortly head out on loan to further enhance his experience.

After being congratulated by his manager, Nathan spoke to club media's Stewart Gardner and revealed his aims for the future...

Nathan, you’ve signed a new deal with United – that must show the belief that the club has in you?
“Yes I hope so. It’s an amazing club and I’m delighted to be here, and to extend my stay even longer is just incredible.”

How’s it been for you so far? It must have been a bit of a whirlwind when you started, but how do you feel now?
“It’s crazy! [Smiles] The feeling I had the first day I walked through the door hasn’t changed. Driving down the lane at the training ground and coming in the door – it’s the same feeling every day, I’m just delighted to be here. It’s the biggest club in the world and it’s unbelievable to be around the players here. It’s a year since I joined and it literally feels the same.”

Nathan Bishop discusses working with our goalkeepers and a potential loan deal, after signing a new United contract…

Do you feel you’ve developed in that time, not only from the coaching you’ve had here, but also from working with some terrific goalkeepers?
"Yes definitely. To be able to work with David [De Gea] every day… David, Dean [Henderson], Granty [Lee Grant] and Sergio [Romero] as well and the two coaches I have in Rich [Richard Hartis] in Craig  [Mawson] and the gaffer as well is fantastic. His backroom staff are brilliant and they help me in every single way. Definitely development-wise I’ve made a lot of steps forward I think.”

The boss has said he thinks it’s a good idea for you to go out on loan to get some further experience – is that your hope?
“Yeah definitely. You learn your trade in playing games, that’s the most exciting thing, playing games and preparing for them. I’m very excited to step out and hopefully be able to play for a team and put all the year’s work into that.”

You’ve already had some professional experience with your first club Southend United, but I guess when you are playing in games which truly matter to people’s lives then it really must help your development?
“Yes. We do this for a job and when you know there are things on the line for people you have to step things up and make it count. To just get three points and go home knowing you’ve done the job that you were there to do is a very exciting thing to hopefully go and do.”

Do you feel more ready now for your next professional club now, when you go out on loan?
“Definitely. When I made my debut [for Southend] I was very excited and I was young and eager to do everything and be really on it. But I think that enthusiasm can sometimes be draining. I only played 45 minutes but I remember those 45 minutes were the quickest and most draining of my life. Now I’m ready to hopefully step into an environment and hopefully play 90 minutes and be able to even lead people and help people, and trust in them knowing they have trust in me; that’s what I’m really excited for.”

Is leading and being more vocal something you want to develop?
“Yes. I’m loud enough to hopefully be behind players and encourage them. I want to be really positive and go into a team where I can lift individuals and help people and help the team I’m in, and really see what we can push on and achieve.”
